Spinel mineral group
The Spinel mineral group is compromised of isomorphous isometric
minerals. The members of this group intermingle with one another,
within limits.
The formula
of the group is:
X 1 Y 2 O
4
X = Iron (Fe),
Magnesium (Mg), Zinc (Zn), Manganese (Mn), Nickel (Ni)
Y = Aluminum
(Al), Iron (Fe), Chromium (Cr), Manganese (Mn), and Vanadium (V)
The most common member is Spinel,
which contains the minerals:
| Spinel | MgAl2O4 |
| Gahnite | ZnAl2O4 |
| Hercynite | FeAl2O4 |
| Galaxite | MnAl2O4 |
Other members of the Spinel mineral group discussed in this guide:
| Magnetite | Fe2+Fe3+2O4 |
| Chromite | FeCr2O4 |
| Franklinite | (Zn,Mn2+,Fe2+)(Fe3+Mn3+)2O4 |
| Magnesiochromite | MgCr2O4 |
There are some very rare members not discussed in this guide.
