Corundum - Corundum is the scientific mineral name of the precious gemstones ruby and sapphire. Ruby is the red variety of corundum, and sapphire encompasses all other gem forms of corundum. Although sapphire is most famous for its blue color, it does, in fact, occur in many colors other than blue.
