Gemstone Guide Help

This help file illustrates the display for each gemstone in this guide. All gemstones are set up in the same format. Pink text portrays what each particular field describes. Blue, underlined text denotes hyperlinks for detailed explanations of applicable properties.

Chemical composition Displays the chemical formula of the gemstone.

Color Describes the color of the gemstone
Hardness Describes the hardness of the gemstone in accordance with Mohs scale (1-10)
SG Describes the  Specific Gravity (density) of the gemstone. Specific gravity is measured by the relative comparison weight of water. For example, if a gemstone has a specific gravity of 3.6, than that mineral is 3.6 times heavier than water.
RI Describes the Refractive Index of the gemstone
DR Describes the Double Refraction of the gemstone
Luster Describes the luster of the mineral

USES
Describes the uses of the gemstone

VARIETIES
Lists the varieties of the gemstone with a short description of each variety

FALSE NAMES
Lists false names really applied to other gemstones. For example, Elie Ruby is not a type of ruby, but rather pyrope garnet.

SIMILAR GEMSTONES
Lists gemstones that may be confused with the selected gemstone, and briefly discusses how to distinguish them.
